Review | Estée Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eye Crayons in 01 Dramatic Black and 03 Dramatic Teal

Here are two chubby eye pencils from the Estée Lauder Topaz Spring 2012 collection.

When I first saw these preview pieces, I was amused by their roundedness and extended nib. Their size lends them ease of use – fatty pencils are so easy to wield – while the longer/sharper-than-usual tip helps draw a more precise line.

They’re matte but have a velvety finish. They blend fairly well and are wonderfully intense. I like to use the black on the lash and water lines (it’s quite waterproof but not smudge-proof, obviously) and the teal smudged out as a base for blue/green/teal/grey shadows. They have a creamy texture that can be smudged out to be used alone or as an eyeshadow/shadow base but do be prepared to layer for more evenness.

What you use beneath them is important too – in my experience, something like Make Up For Ever Eye Prime is a stiff base to work with and caking can occur. As such, something slightly more emollient (Too Faced Shadow Insurance) might be more suitable with these kohls.

The two colours pair well for a lovely eye look.

I enjoy their versatility and how effortlessly they glide on. I particularly like their rich pigments which can work on their own or layered. Above is a look with the teal as a shadow base and the black to line (the wing was created with a gel liner, though).

In Singapore, these limited edition pencils retail at S$34. I do wish the brand would make them part of the permanent makeup range!
