Review | Déjàvu Fiberwig

Better known as Imju Déjàvu Fiberwig in the States, this famous mascara (S$25 / US$22) is one of the top-selling lash extenders in Japan, the country of its origin.What it is formulated to do:

Engineered to create the perfect lashes with twice the amount of micro-fine interconnecting fibers, the instant drying formula creates a long lasting film coat around your natural lashes. Fiberwig imparts a perfect, smudge-proof maximum lash extension effect with a water-resistant formula that’s easy to remove with warm water, without risking damaging or losing your natural lashes.

What else you need to know:

A jet-black fiber film coats the surface of each lash with long-lasting, clump-free, lash lengthening color that’s resistant to tears, sweat, and oil.

Touted to be ‘Paint-On False Lashes’, this tube of wet, black pigment and copious fibre is meant to impart lash fluttering length and some semblance of volume.

Despite its supposed popularity, Fiberwig has its fair share of detractors: complaints of how it flakes and doesn’t lengthen lashes abound. It also seems to have a big brush that comes across as unwieldy and for some, have a tendency to weigh down lashes. In short, some people think it is rubbish.

I’ve since discovered that Fiberwig works best when paired with a voluminising mascara. With something to grab on to, the mascara is able to display its lengthening ability. I like how lashes visibly grow longer and for the most part, look natural.

I also love the fact that this mascara rarely smudges yet is easy to remove. As much as I like budgeproof mascaras (Fasio’s are my go-to ones), they are a pain to take off. It is fascinating to see how the little tubular fibres from Fiberwig come off easily and cleanly.

When used on its own, I admit that Fiberwig could be better. Perhaps the best word to describe it would be ‘inconsistent’. It doesn’t always do what it should – there are days when it lengthens my short and sparse lashes but does nothing much for them at other times. However, when paired with a voluminsing or even a regular mascara, its designated properties come through and are more apparent.
