Review | Shiseido Multi-Defense UV Protector Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++

Launching this June is Shiseido Multi-Defense UV Protector Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ (30 ml/S$59). A white liquid that dries to a matte finish, this water/perspiration-resistant sunscreen seems to control sebum production very well – when I have this on, there is barely any shine on my face, despite several hours of wear.

It doesn’t have much slip and can be drying (it shouldn’t be paired with a dry/oil-control foundation) but I must say it is excellent as a stay-put sunscreen and makeup base. I think it’d be good for oily skin, given how it keeps my face almost-matte the entire day. It has a faint white cast but that is easily rectified with foundation or other base makeup.

True to its claim, the lotion is feather-light and once applied, it doesn’t leave a sticky residue, unlike some other sunscreens.

Here I am, at the end of a long day, with only the sunscreen on my face (my brows are lightly filled in and I have lipstick on but no foundation or powder). The sunscreen leaves a faint whiteness and though it doesn’t have much coverage – my facial spider veins are still visible – it makes my skin look somewhat clearer and more even-toned, as a whole. :)

Do you know if this one is similar to Ultimate Sun Protection Cream for Face SPF 55?

    • makeupmag says:

      Hi Alexuta,

I haven’t tried the SPF 55 one you mentioned but going by the name, I’d say Multi-Defense is probably less creamy/thick – it has a very fluid texture.

My biggest fear is sunblock that makes my face oily, so yay for this! Love this review, gonna get it! x

how does this compare to the clarins one?? i’m considering between this 2!!

  • Alicia says:

okk, but this seems much more pocket friendly. think i’ll get this instead!

      Hi Alicia,

I hope it works for you! :) It can be a little dry but in this humid weather, I think it’d be great.

ahh! i am going to get this! sounds great!
is this a sneak preview? :p cos not launched yet and u get to show us alr? :D
btw is there much differences between cheaper sunblock like biore and this kinda?
    thanks!

      Hi Stella,

Yes, it’s a sneak preview of sorts (I received it during White Day on 14 March!). ;)

Good question! I’m not so fond of brands like Sunplay – somehow, the sunscreens I’d tried from the brand in the past didn’t impress me in terms of texture. The Biore ones are good, though. I think the latter are similar to this one but this seems to last longer on me. Do try to obtain a sample first (if they have them).

May I know if there is denatured alcohol in this? I’m having a terrible time trying to find suitable sunscreen for the face. Almost every brand which has sunscreen with a fairly light texture puts denatured alcohol in it, and my very sensitive skin hates it and doesn’t deal well with very thick and heavy cream type sunblocks as well.

      Hi Rachel,

Am still waiting to hear from Shiseido – have brought up your query with them. :) If you’d like to try it before buying, they’re giving away samples of it this Friday at Takashimaya when it launches.

I like the packaging! The white bottle seems to promise fair white skin as well! ;-)

  • Dani says:

Hi can you tell if it is scented at all?

  • makeupmag says:

    Hi Rachel,

Sorry for the late reply. Here’s Shiseido’s response:

It does contain denatured alcohol that helps to bind the ingredients together. If your reader is allergic to alcohol, she can go for our Gentle Sun Protection Lotion which is suitable for babies and people with sensitive skin.

    HTH! :)
