Review | Dior New Look 5 Couleurs Couture Colour Eyeshadow Palette in 254 Bleu de Paris

Here is Bleu de Paris, part of the Dior New Look makeup collection.

Four eyeshadow quints are in the collection; the heart of each palette inspired by the colours of Monsieur Dior’s iconic New Look haute couture fashion designs of 1947.

These gentle centre hues are framed by four other shades.

Royal Kaki: A green tinged with a hint of yellow, which appeared as a grand evening gown, was the first shade to be “crowned” by Christian Dior, and is now reinterpreted as an eyeshadow accessorised by gold and pearl shades.

Rose Porcelaine: For Christian Dior, this was “the sweetest of colours”. A memory of his childhood home, it was one of his “favourite shades”. Its freshness is highlighted by a hint of elegant innocence in pastel and violet toned shadows.

Grège: Introduced in 1947, Dior created shades of white, brown or beige to go with each collection. In 1951, the natural element was revealed in a variation of brown named “Terre de France”. At the heart of the 5 Couleurs palette, it caresses the eyes with light, revealing their naked beauty, accentuated by warm tones.

Bleu de Paris: A tribute to the Versailles blue of Marie-Antoinette, it is reinterpreted in a soft version imbued with Parisian chic, by an eyeshadow in a gentle shade electrified by bewitching nuances.

I was delighted when I first received my press sample – the beautiful combination of shimmer, satin and matte finishes, as well as the cool blue-grey tones, really appealed to me.

The colour blue runs in the veins of Dior and this palette aptly represents the brand with its colour pans tinged with that calming hue.

The colours look like they were inspired by this portrait of the French queen; the nuanced tones certainly look similar~!

In the palette are:

  • A shimmery charcoal with a hint of gunmetal
  • A matte blackened navy
  • A shimmery blue-silver
  • A shimmery silver
  • An iridescent powder blue; a very pale robin’s egg blue, if you will.

The complementary colours blend easily and work beautifully with one another. As with other Dior shadow quints, the five shades can be mixed and matched, used alone or layered.

The centre shade is quite intriguing, thanks to its subtle flash; it adds a little complexity to an eye look.

The matte shade swatches a little chalkily but it layers well over pencil eyeliners for intensity.

The three shimmery shades are richly-pigmented and apply smoothly. They can be a touch frosty (I was just a little heavy-handed in the photo above), so a light hand would be good for application.

As a whole, the colours show up nicely on the lids and last for quite a long time.

Above is the lovely Lisa’s Eldridge using this palette on her model for a beautiful smokey navy eye.

In Singapore, this palette retails at S$95 is part of the permanent Dior makeup collection. It’s a splurge but a worthwhile purchase, if you love blues and greys.

      Hi PB,

Blues are one of my (many) eyeshadow faves, heh! I agree – this can be amped up or toned down.

      Thank you – the black/grey was passe…and tired-looking after a while. :P

Beautiful! I have my eye on royal kaki. Dior palettes are getting very much pricier nowadays though :(

      Hi Meryl!

Thank you. :) Was tired of the dark tones. :P

I love this collection – waiting impatiently for a gift with purchase to justify buying one or two!

    Hi mag,
    Lovely blending by you!
May I tap on your expertise?
I’d love to get royal kaki palette and before I can act, Dior is coming up with more khaki palettes with the fall collection!
May I ask your opinion? I’ve fair Chinese skin, naturally slightly warm toned, most brands like estee lauder don’t have foundations light enough for me.
Do you think khakis wash fair chinese skin out? I heard that the yellow tones can make our skin sallow.
What are your views? How do you choose khaki or olive for the eyes?
    Thanks Mag!

    • makeupmag says:

      Hi Eunice,

      Thank you!

I think it depends more on your undertones than your fairness. If you look good in warm colours, that palette will probably suit you. Khakis can look amazing on Chinese skin!

I’m seeing quite a bit of blue in blogs for this summer…love it as a departure from neutrals…Lisa Eldridge is a genius and did such a great job on the model!

    • makeupmag says:

      Hi Beauty Box!

And there’s Dior Lagoon in the Summer Mix collection too! ;)

Lisa Eldridge is brilliant. Eloquent, beautiful and talented…she’s like Nigella Lawson. :D

Hi Mag, I think the connection you made from Marie Antoinette’s portrait colors to the Bleu de Paris palette is brilliant! It looks like every color came from there! :)

    • makeupmag says:

      Hello Milktea,

I was quite surprised by how the colours are so matchy-match-match with the ones in the palette!

  • Farah Dean says:

Mag, You wear this so well. I hv only used mine once & forgotten all abt this.

    • makeupmag says:

Thanks, Farah. It’s such a complementary palette of greys and blues; very easy to put together a look with it.
