Jo Malone Sugar and Spice Collection

The creation of master perfumer Christine Nagel, this limited edition quintet of scents is so precious in quantity that no press pieces were given at the preview. As such, my thoughts below are based on first-impression sniffs. :)

Jo Malone Lemon Tart Cologne

The mouth-watering tang of lemon tart. Sparkling with citrus fruits and verbena, contrasted with swirls of meringue and lemon thyme. Refreshing.

Lemon Tart has the invigorating zing of bitter lemon and is reflective of the brand’s minimalist style, thanks to its clean notes and straightforward character.

Jo Malone Redcurrant and Cream Cologne

A summer pudding. Sharp-scarlet juices of redcurrants, lush strawberries and raspberries, rippling through creamy musk. Vivacious and enticing.

Redcurrant & Cream is as rich and smooth as it sounds – a deep and juicy scent that was created with that traditional English dessert in mind. It pairs well with Lemon Tart to balance the latter’s acidic edge.

Jo Malone Elderflower and Gooseberry Cologne

A voluptuous gooseberry fool. Crushed, summer-green gooseberries, juicy with lychee, enfolded into the soft delicacy of elderflower. Tender and feminine.

Fresh and crisp, Elderflower & Gooseberry is the least foody-smelling of the five. The juicy tang of green gooseberry is interestingly offset by the baby-powdery softness of elderflower.

The brand recommends that this be paired with English Pear and Freesia for a unique floral whiff. I found this combination to be somewhat green on me, though.

Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit Cologne

Just-baked biscuit. Spiced with ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon, melting into caramel. Butter-crumbly with roasted hazelnuts. Warmed by tonka bean and vanilla. Irresistible.

A warming scent, the spice notes of Ginger Biscuit come forth as the fragrance settles…much like a crumbly ginger cookie. :)

Jo Malone Bitter Orange and Chocolate Cologne

The bite of bitter orange, layered with dark chocolate. Orange peel counterpoised with warm, powdery cocoa, milky coconut and coumarin.
Sumptuous and addictive.

An indisputable foody scent, the distinct choc-orange tones of Bitter Orange & Chocolate made me smell like that very confectionery. It might appeal to those who love this sweet treat but the impossibly linear nature of this fragrance makes it too literal for my liking.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the quirky ad campaign of this collection. I love the high-energy kooky vibe!
