Much loved by mothers everywhere for its skin-soothing properties, this healing salve is almost always sold-out at the stores.
Described as an ‘ouchless antibacterial for skin lesion(s)’, this non-comedogenic product is free of fragrance, parabens and preservatives and does not contain common allergens. It has also been clinically-proven to be safe for dry and sensitive skin. Naturally, it is suitable for infants and children, as well as pregnant and nursing mummies. I’d advise doing a patch test first, anyway – YMMV, after all.
Monolaurin is a coconut-derived, gentle-yet-powerful disinfectant, antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral + antiprotozoal. Clinically proven as effective as 70% isopropyl alcohol + topical treatments at killing micro-organisms.
Ouchlessly and lickety-split quickly helps treat infections that can occur in skin damaged by eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, herpes, wounds, cuts, grazes, insect bites, minor burns etc.
– VMV Hypoallergenics
The ingredients aren’t mind-blowing (petrolatum, Cocos nucifera aka coconut oil, glyceryl laurate) but I think it’s the gentle formula that works well on baby skin. I actually like to use breast milk on bites and cuts but when I want something more lasting and occlusive, I use this on my little one…and on myself, when I get grazes.
I observed a little rash that my baby had on her bum for a couple of days and this balm seemed to help clear it quite quickly. I’ll acknowledge that baby skin regenerates more speedily than adult skin, so I tried it on a scrape I happened to have at the same time and happily, the wound faded fast.
ETA: The brand tweeted me to say that monolaurin is also found in breastmilk. Awesome!
It’s good on insect bites too, aiding the healing process by creating a barrier between the skin and any bacteria that could lead to secondary infection. This clear ointment is apparently also good for soothing eczema flare-ups and calming acne-prone skin, though I’ve not tried it for those purposes.
In Singapore, it retails at S$38 for 15 g. The last time I checked, it was indeed sold out but do call the store (6341 9378) to make a reservation. VMV Hypoallergenics is located at #B3-48, Ion Orchard. Do visit the brand’s website to find out more about its ‘skinfatuation’. ;)
