I recently read an alarming article by Paula Begoun of Paula’s Choice that lists the harmful effects of alcohol on the skin.
Sesame from Viva Woman has also written a post about alcohol being unacceptable in skincare products. On the other hand, I found a piece by FutureDerm that addresses these arguments. VMV Hypoallergenics, the source for the image above, has an ‘it depends’ stand on this controversial ingredient.
I can’t help but wonder why Japanese and Korean skincare companies would include this supposedly-harmful ingredient in their products and offer them to their customers. After all, these East Asian countries are well-known for their superior skincare born out of technical know-how. Then again, the people from these places generally have good skin, thanks to their clement climes and since profit is the aim for most brands, who can say for sure if it’s not all about the money?
As with most beauty products, YMMV – perhaps alcohol (denatured or fatty) doesn’t affect you and might even seem to help your skin. As for me, I’ve had both positive and negative experiences with alcohol. However, my skin is changing as I approach 40 and I’ve had my fair share of severe allergic reactions, so I will need to be more discerning. In any case, I hope you find the links useful; here’s to better skin for you and me!
